11 Carrier Oils to Use Instead of Fractionated Coconut Oil

A question I often receive is: “What carrier oils can I use in place of fractionated coconut oil?” To answer this, I’ve compiled a list of 11 whole carrier oils that make excellent substitutes. But first, let’s explore why fractionated coconut oil is popular and why I choose not to use it.

What makes Fractionated Coconut Oil So Popular?

  • Colorless and neutral, ideal for essential oils
  • Odorless, preserving the final product’s scent
  • Long shelf life due to processing
  • Stays liquid in cold temperatures

While it may seem ideal, fractionated coconut oil is highly processed, removing beneficial compounds like antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

To find a replacement you want carrier oils that are:

  • Light or no scent
  • Clear or pale color
  • Compatible with most skin types
  • Shelf-stable for at least 12 months

Here are 11 whole carrier oils that fit the criteria

Sweet Almond Oil – A versatile oil suitable for most skin types, rich in vitamin E and squalene. Note: Individuals with nut allergies should exercise caution. Shelf life: 12–18 months.

Camellia Seed Oil – Clear and often odorless, this 'dry' oil is ideal for oily skin types. High in tannins, it offers a non-greasy feel.

Jojoba Oil – Technically a liquid wax ester, jojoba is non-allergenic and excellent for rollerball applicators. It has a slight golden hue and may possess a subtle scent., versatile, non-allergenic, with a subtle smoky scent.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil – Similar to jojoba but a true oil, meadowfoam seed oil boasts a long shelf life due to its unique fatty acid composition. Note: Some less refined versions may have a mild scent.

Kukui Nut Oil – Light, colorless, and odorless, kukui nut oil absorbs well into the skin. High in polyunsaturated fatty acids, it is more prone to rancidity and should be stored in a cool, dark place.

Marula Oil – Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, marula oil is a premium choice for skincare. Odorless and pale in color, it is suitable for various applications. Shelf life: 12+ months.

Safflower Oil – An affordable, light oil with a neutral scent, safflower oil is a good standby carrier oil for a wide range of applications.

Abyssinian Oil – With a unique combination of fatty acids, abyssinian oil offers a rich yet absorbent feel on the skin. It has a light color and minimal scent, making it a versatile base carrier oil.

Rice Bran Oil – Often easy to find at grocery stores, rice bran oil has a neutral scent and pale color. High in phytosterols and squalene, it offers anti-inflammatory properties.

Daikon Radish Seed Oil – Clear, odorless, and light-feeling, daikon radish seed oil is excellent for fine hair, providing a silky texture. High in omega-3 fatty acids, it should be stored in the fridge to extend shelf life.

Grapeseed Oil – Commonly available, grapeseed oil is light in color and scent. Slightly astringent, it is suitable for oily skin. Shelf life can be extended by adding vitamin E and storing in a cool, dark place.

Notes:

Store oils in a cool, dark place. Oils high in polyunsaturated fats need extra care, a cool dark cupboard or in the refrigerator.

Working with Refined vs. Unrefined Oils:

Most oils undergo light refinement to remove plant material, but highly refined oils lose many beneficial compounds. Choose minimally processed oils when possible.
